As a commercial real estate professional, having your own blog is one of the easiest ways to market yourself. Share your knowledge and expertise, your opinions, your property listings, market news, and establish yourself as a leader in your market. Start your blog today with this easy step-by-step guide. This post may contain affiliate links; however I only promote products I love, from companies I trust.
Here are the quick steps:
- Pick Your Domain Name
- Set Up Your Web Hosting Account
- Select and Install Your Blog Theme
Pick Your Domain Name
Your domain name is the web address (for example: www.CREpress.com). Your domain name can be your personal name or a company business name. The hosting company that I recommend below will provide you with a FREE domain name when you sign up for their web hosting service. Use the Domain Name Checker below to see if the domain name you want is available. Most commercial real estate professionals will use their own name, their name plus city, or their name plus their specialization.
Set Up Your Web Hosting Account
Your web host is the server where your blog “lives.” There are hundreds of web hosting companies, however you want to select a company that is easy to use, provides quick website loading times, offers affordable package prices, and has excellent customer service and tech support. For these reasons, I strongly believe that Bluehost is by far the best! I have used Bluehost since 2009, and recommend them to everyone who wants to start a blog or website.
Bluehost offers affordable packages, however my readers (you!) will receive your hosting for as low as $3.95 per month, plus you will receive a free domain name!
Click here to buy your domain name and sign up for web hosting with Bluehost. Below is an easy step-by-step guide to walk you through the process.
After you click on the link above, simply click on “Get Started Now.”
Select your plan:
If you are a first time blogger, the Basic plan is all you need. Keep in mind that you pay for your web hosting on an annual basis.
Select your domain name:
Choose your free domain name, or signup with an existing domain name if you already have one.
Create your account and pay for your plan:
Tip: the longer you sign up for, the cheaper it will be (per month). Definitely sign up for at least 12 months to receive your free domain name.
Pick a WordPress theme:
Pick a theme to get started (you can change this later). WordPress offers tons of free themes or you have the option of purchasing a premium theme. The theme is the overall design and layout of your blog.
To browse more free WordPress themes, simply click on “Appearance” on the left hand menu and then “Themes.”
Optional: Purchase A Premium Theme
To give your blog a custom look, and personalize it so it matches your brand, I recommend you purchase a custom or premium Theme. Studio Press and Elegant Themes are great sites to browse for custom WordPress themes as they both have a wide array of styles and designs to choose from.
If you purchase a theme, simply return to your WordPress dashboard and click on “Appearance”, then “Themes”, then “Upload A New Theme” and select the .zip file of the theme you purchased.
Your WordPress Dashboard:
This is where you will go to customize your blog. On the left hand side of the screen, you will see the main menu. Going forward, you can log into your WordPress dashboard by going to “www.YourDomain.com/wp-admin”. This is where you will design and customize your blog, and write all of your blog posts.
Launch your new site:
Your Bluehost Cpanel:
Your “Cpanel” is where you can view your account information, such as billing and payment info, manage your domain, and set up your custom email address. View this page by logging in directly at Bluehost.com
That’s it! Now it’s time to start customizing your commercial real estate blog. Upload your logo, change the colors, and add pages. Congratulations! You have officially just set up your blog! Be sure to check out my recommended list of the best blogging tools and resources.
